Advising Young People on Housing and Homelessness

Suitable for:
Anyone working as an adviser or advocate for young people on housing issues.
Aim:
To develop participants' understanding of young single homelessness and the relevant legislative frameworks in order to increase confidence in using the law to advocate on behalf of young people in housing need.
Course Structure:
A one-day course supplemented by detailed course notes that will act as future reference material and relevant exercises This course has been mapped against the NOS4Legal Advice knowledge unit 36.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have:
- Developed an understanding of the current homelessness legislation and the concepts of eligibility, homelessness, priority need, vulnerability, intentionality and local connection
- Developed a familiarity with the key sections of the Children Act and the Children Leaving Care Act and understood the implications of recent Children Act case law for service delivery
- Fully understood the importance of good joint working practices and protocols and the vital importance of access to good quality independent advice to help young people negotiate what will in some areas (at least in the short term) be a tortuous journey
