Challenging Decisions for Homeless Young People

Suitable for:
Advisers working with young people in housing need.
Participants must have:
- Attended our Advising Young People on Housing and Homelessness and/or
- Have a good working knowledge of the homelessness legislation and
- Have day to day experience of working with homeless young people.
- Knowledge of the Children Act and Children Leaving Care Act would be an advantage.
Aim:
To assist advisers with day to day problems around homelessness legislation and in seeking reviews of adverse decisions. To develop an understanding of the complaints procedure that can be used to challenging Children Act or Children Leaving Care Act decisions or inertia.
Course structure:
A one day course supplemented by course notes
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have:
- Explored typical problems and potential remedies
- Understood the relevant Legislation, the Code of Guidance and case law
- Understood Reviews, timescales and processes
- Identified Data Protection issues and access to personal files
- Understood the framework for legal challenge: the principles of administrative law and the importance of process,
- Developed an understanding of the Children Act and CLCA complaints procedures
Practical exercises and worked answers on the above issues, will be based on specific cases or examples you would like discussed on the course.
