An Introduction to Counselling Young People

Diploma level trained Counsellors and Counselling Supervisors new to working with young people

Aim:
To develop understanding of the developmental needs of young people, aged 11-25, focusing particularly on the process of adolescence. This training will offer the opportunity to study, critically discuss, practice, review and evaluate proactive counselling approaches specifically orientated to working with young people, which differ from approaches used with children and adults and which are underpinned by Youth Access core values and principles, and informed by Youth Access Quality Standards for Counselling.

Course Structure:
This is a two day training course using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.

Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will practice the proactive approach with a young person and submit a written assignment after the workshop.

Topics covered:

  • Theories of adolescent development and changes in the adolescent brain
  • Young people in transition from dependence towards autonomy
  • Attachment theory and its relevance in Adolescence
  • The Geldard & Geldard model of proactive counselling
  • Confidentiality, consent Gillick Competence and Fraser Guidelines
  • Counselling young people in different settings
  • Using effective approaches to regular review and evaluation of counselling
  • Youth Access Quality Standards for Counselling and Core Values and principles of working with young people
  • Current legislation with regard to role and responsibilities when working with young people

Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant.
