Identifying Housing Status and the Prevention of Homelessness - In partnership with Shelter

Suitable for:
Anyone working as an adviser or advocate for young people on housing issues.
Aims:
This course aims to increase participants’ understanding of landlord tenant law with a view to identifying circumstances where it may be possible to prevent homelessness.
Course structure:
A one-day course supplemented by detailed course notes and relevant exercises.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish between a licence and a tenancy
- Recognise which types of occupancy are “excluded” from the Protection from Eviction Act
- Identify the various types of licence and tenancy
- Recognise the appropriate notice that the landlord needs to serve and be able to spot defective notices
- Understand the various “grounds” for possession that can be used by landlords (depending upon status) and the distinction between discretionary and mandatory grounds
- Have a basic understanding of the court process and paperwork and the ability to recognise circumstances where it is possible to prevent homelessness
- Recognise situations covered by the Rent Arrears Pre-Action protocol
- Understand the importance of engaging other agencies when attempting to prevent homelessness and the mechanism and triggers that can be used to bring in appropriate support service – either statutory via the Children Act, Children Leaving Care Act, Community Care and Mental Health legislation or other non statutory support services.
