An Introduction to Youth Advice Skills

Suitable for:
Information/advice workers, PA’s, youth workers providing rights- based advice. It is particularly suitable for staff new to advice work
Aim:
To be familiar with the basic skills needed in youth advice work
Course Structure:
A 1-day course using a number of interactive training methods, including group work, role plays and scenario case studies intended to link theory to practice.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have:
- understood the difference between personal support, information and advice
- looked into how to research and impart appropriate information
- understood underpinning advice principles, including independence and confidentiality
- developed active listening skills
- learnt how to use problem solving skills to explore young people’s needs
- recognised appropriate boundaries and the limits of their competence to give advice
- identified when and how to make timely referrals to more specialist service
Trainer:
Helen Stollar, Youth Access’ in-house advice trainer. She has over 30 years experience in the advice sector, has worked as a benefits adviser in a Law Centre, as a Trainer at LASA, and as Advice Manager at a University Student Advice Service
