Solution Focused Approaches to counselling young people

Aim
To develop an understanding of how to apply Solution focused approaches within the counselling relationship, in order to contribute to young peoples’ resilience, by building on their resources, strengths and abilities and working within their own belief systems and goals. 


Course Structure:
This one day training workshop uses interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.

Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will demonstrate critical evaluation and effective communication of relevant theory and skills through presentation of a post workshop case study.

1. Overview and key assumptions and beliefs of Solution Focused Brief Therapy

2. The relevance of Solution Focused approaches to effective counselling with young people

3. How to structure a Solution Focused Counselling Session

4. Future focus, best hopes and preferred future

5. Instances of preferred future happening in the past and present

6. Highlighting progress

7. Feedback and follow up


Trainer:

Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant
