Welfare Benefits and Young People

Suitable for:
Information/advice workers, PA’s, youth workers and others providing benefits advice to young people.

Aim:
To develop participants’ knowledge of Welfare Benefit rules and procedures to enable accurate and effective advice to be given to young people

Course Structure:
A one-day open course. Lively knowledge-based course with comprehensive hand-outs to take away. This course has been mapped against the NOS4Legal Advice knowledge unit 36.

Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Understood benefits for young people not studying Income Support, Income Based Jobseekers Allowance, Severe Hardship Payments, other benefit possibilities, Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000, claim procedures and your role in supporting young people to make claims, employment and support allowance for people under 18
  • Explored an overview of the impact of studying on benefits the definitions of ‘study’ and ‘relevant education’ for benefit purposes; effect of studying on IS, JSA and employment and support allowance
  • Understood Housing Benefit how non-dependents affect the HB claimant; the special rules that apply to those under 25
  • Understood Social Fund application routes for Community Care Grants, Budgeting and Crisis loans.
