Aim:
To develop an understanding of the different elements of own and others identity, and reflect on how identity can shape our core values and how prejudice develops and is sustained.
To explore how to work with difference and to develop dialogue which can begin to challenge prejudice in the counselling process.
Course Structure:
This is a two day training course using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.
Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will submit a written assignment after the training in the form of a journal showing how they have applied the learning from the workshop in their work with young people.

4. Minority and Majority identity formation
5. Taking a transcultural approach to counselling
6. Allport’s scale of prejudice and discrimination
7. Discrimination (Multiple, Institutional, Internalised oppression)
8. Community Cohesion
10. Exploring prejudice and discrimination in the counselling process
11. Using human rights based approaches within the counselling setting
12. National Occupational Standards for Counselling – Demonstrate equality and Diversity Awareness.
Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant
