Young People's Rights within the Education System - A Practical Approach to Advice

Information/advice workers, PA’s, youth workers and others providing general advice to young people.
Aim:
To develop participants' confidence to give initial basic advice and identify the potential for legal challenge for young people within the education system
Course structure:
A one day lively knowledge-based course with a balance of relevant theory, legislation/guidance and practical tips.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course delegates will have:
- Identified common unlawful conduct by authorities, schools and colleges
- Examined effective ways of representing young people facing education problems
- Understood the exclusions and appeals process from schools and colleges
- Understood the school admissions and appeal process
- Understood Special Educational Needs including Statements and Appeals
- Explored the provision of “Alternative Provisions” and “Education Otherwise”
- Looked at parents'/carers' responsibility for child’s attendance
- Explored how to access local services for young people for bullying including counselling/psychological support
- Explored the rights to student loans/grants/education maintenance allowance/free school meals/uniform grants/free travel to school.
- Identified when referral should be made to specialised legal advice.
