Aim:
To develop a comprehensive understanding of the purposes of counselling assessment and its good practice, including the principles and tools of risk assessment, and to consider the specific ways that counsellors can carry out effective young person centred counselling assessments within young people’s counselling services.
Course Structure:
This is a two day training course using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.
Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will practice counselling assessments with young people and submit a written assignment after the workshop.

- Definition of Young person centred counselling assessment
- Purposes and potential pitfalls of counselling assessment
- Assessing for risk and resilience factors
- Assessing for “Gillick Competence”
- National Standards and good practice Guidelines for Counselling Assessment
- Highlighting Specialist assessment for specific issues (Self-harm, Suicide, potential violence, youth offending, substance misuse, Eating Disorders, Safeguarding, Psychosis)
- Making and receiving effective Referrals
Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant.
