Adolescence: A personal and professional exploration of the transition from childhood to adulthood.

Event Type: Training

Dates / Venue:

12th November 2007 - Youth Access, London

‘Youth is the emergence of spirit within the psyche’ [Hillman 1990]

‘The common miracle that defines childhood and adolescent development is its constant change; there is no period in life when human beings are so malleable, so protean in their own unfolding possibilities. There is also no time in life when human beings are so utterly in thrall to their own emotions, so completely in need of guidance, nurture, the steadying hand of someone who knows better what the world can offer, for good or ill’ [Wylie, 1998]

‘There is an assumption that sensitivity to our own adolescent process is the key that allows entrance into the heavily barricaded inner world of an adolescent client. Staying in relation to the vulnerabilities we felt as adolescents engenders in us the necessary therapeutic sensitivity from which to ground our work’ [Frankel 1998]

Through predominantly experiential methods, this course provides practitioners with an opportunity to examine the nature of adolescence and the developmental needs of young people in transition from childhood to adulthood.  Practitioners will also be exploring their own experience of adolescence and philosophy of working with young people in order to further resource their practice.  This is also an opportunity to share ideas, concerns and good practice.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Explored the ways in which their experience of adolescence and philosophy of working with young people can resource their practice.
  • Examined the developmental, transitional needs of young people.
  • Extended their repertoire of appropriate interventions.
  • Had opportunities to share ideas, concern, good practice and issues for supervision.

What previous participants have said about this trainer's courses:

  • I thoroughly found this workshop powerfully meaningful on an experiential level. I felt the trainer facilitated our group in a very respectful, authentic way and I felt enriched by the depth of engagement by members of the group.
  • It was an excellent day – a very safe space where as a group we were open and honest with ourselves and the group - the process mirroring the aim of our work with young people.
