The assessment and management of risk and of harm to self or others is a shared responsibility between the counsellor, supervisor, manager and the agency. This course offers the opportunity to share good practice within the group and explores practical principles and a framework to support the assessment and management of risk within the counselling assessment and the organisational context.

Course structure                                  

A one day course using trainer input, exercises in small groups and a training pack/work-book, which can be used both during and after the workshop to share and implement learning in the work place

Learning outcomes

• An understanding of the importance of the counselling relationship in the assessment and management of risk, involving the young person and making objective decisions.
• An understanding of good practice including the YA counselling assessment standard
• Understanding the evidence, principles and frameworks that support good practise in risk assessment and management
• How to use the framework, tools and evidence
• Identifying partners for consultancy and referral
• Learning that can be shared within the workshop and with colleagues
• Access to resources to support YIACS in preparation for commissioning their services
