Exploring the issue of Young people with Eating Disorders

Aim:

To develop understanding of the definitions, prevalence, causes and effects of eating disorders suffered by young people, and to explore options for treatment and recovery.


Course Structure:

This is a one day workshop using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.

Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will provide a post workshop journal illustrating key aspects of counselling young people with eating disorders.

 

Topics covered:

1. Categories and definitions of Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and eating disorders otherwise not specified (EDNOS).

2. Signs and symptoms of eating disorders and their effects on the lives of young people who suffer from them.

3. Prevalence of eating disorders in the UK and groups most likely to be at risk.

4. Complexity of causes of eating disorders.

5. Recovery and the importance of early detection and treatment.

6. Counselling interventions most likely to be effective in working with a young person with eating disorders.

7. Referral to specialist services.

 

Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant
