Advising Young People on Housing and Homelessness

Suitable for: anyone working as an adviser or advocate for young people.

Course Structure: A one-day open course supplemented by detailed course notes that will act as future reference material and relevant exercises

Aim: To develop participants’ understanding of young single homelessness and the relevant legislative frameworks in order to increase confidence in using the law to advocate on behalf of young people in housing need.

Course content
1. Brief discussion on the levels, patterns and trends of young single homelessness.
2. The homelessness legislation as amended by the Homelessness Act 2002.
3. The new priority need categories and the assessment of vulnerability.
4. The Children Act.
5. The Leaving Care Act.
6. Intentionality
7. Local connection
8. S.17 of the Children Act
