Understanding Identity, Exploring Differences and Challenging Prejudice (New Course)

Event Type: Training

Dates / Venue:

11th June 2008 - Youth Access, London

This course is appropriate for: counsellors, youth workers, PA’s, managers and supervisors of all practitioners in a helping relationship with young people.

Exploring and understanding the different elements of our own and others identity is a key step in working effectively with difference and diversity. Through understanding how identity shapes our core values and principles we are in a better position to recognise how prejudice develops and is sustained. This course will use training methods developed from a successful pilot in equality diversity and human rights to share practical frameworks and exercises that can help us to understand identity, explore difference, and challenge prejudice and discrimination.

Course structure:

This is a one-day workshop using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools. The training workbook is designed to be used both during the training and afterwards to enable effective implementation in the work place.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the workshop participants will have:

  • Identified explored and shared key aspects of their own identity
  • Developed their understanding of diversity and its impact on the identity of themselves and others
  • Recognised how core elements of diversity, coupled with their life experiences have shaped their values and principles
  • Understood the importance of recognising and acknowledging diversity
  • Identified both prejudices that they hold and those that they and others face
  • Practiced supportive and effective ways of challenging prejudice and discrimination in their work with young people and within their organisations and communities.

Feedback from participants:

“The facilitator engaged us to gel as a group. Her methods did not cause confrontation but enabled us to think from a different perspective.”
