Aim
To develop participants understanding about why and how young people engage in self-harm, and in particular self-injury, and to explore ways of responding effectively to these issues within the counselling relationship.
Course Structure:
This one-day workshop uses interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.
Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will write an assignment illustrating key aspects of responding within their counselling practice to young people who self-harm.
Topics covered:
1. Definitions of “self-harm”
2. Reasons why young people self-harm
3. Myths about self-harm
4. The importance of maintaining a non-judgemental response to disclosure of self-harm
5. Developing understanding of the function and place of self-harm for the individual young person
6. The implications of difference in young people’s experience of self-harm
7. Working with the young person to identify what help they need
8. Exploring when to signpost or make referral to other services
Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant.
