Counselling young people at risk of suicide

Aim:
To develop understanding of how to work effectively in the counselling process with a young person who is having thoughts and feelings about suicide, including identifying the level of risk and establishing a risk management plan with the young person, and/or identifying when and how to refer on for further help.


Course Structure:
This is a one day workshop using interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.

Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will provide a post workshop written assignment illustrating their learning.


Topics covered:

1. Definitions of Suicide, suicidal behaviour, and suicidal ideation

2. Groups of young people particularly at risk

3. Warning signs

4. Common myths

5. Establishing levels of risk

6. Risk Management process which engages the young person as an equal partner

7. Managing and breaking confidentiality

8. Referral to specialist services

9. Sources of professional support for the practitioner


Trainer:

Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant
