Aim
This module aims to develop knowledge of the range and types of traumas which may face young people along with an understanding of how trauma is processed physiologically and emotionally, and to identify how young people can be supported in the counselling process, and where necessary be referred to further specialist support.
Course Structure:
This one-day workshop uses interactive training methods, including trainer input, small group discussions, experiential work and the use of a workbook containing background information, frameworks, exercises and action planning tools.
Participants will be encouraged to do some pre-course reading. Those wishing to take forward credits from the course will write a post workshop case study illustrating their learning.
Topics covered:
1. Definitions of Trauma both as an objective event and as something subjectively experienced.
2. Types of trauma experienced by young people
3. Range of Trauma of particular relevance to young people
4. Risk and Resilience factors including the importance of positive attachments
5. Physiological emotional and mental responses to Trauma
6. Working with trauma in the Counselling Process to balance containment and processing of Trauma
7. Basic understanding of and recognition of how to make young person centred referrals of clients to specialist treatments available for PTSD
8. Posttraumatic Growth
Trainer:
Carolyn Mumby has over twenty years experience within the field of youth work, counselling, project development, project management and training. She is a qualified youth and community worker, counsellor, leadership coach, and trainer and an experienced casework supervisor and consultant
