Welfare Benefits for Sick or Disabled Young People

Suitable for:
Information / advice workers, PAs, youth workers and others providing benefits advice to young people aged up to 25.
Aim:
To develop participants’ knowledge of welfare benefits that can assist young people experiencing physical or mental illness or disability, but which are currently under-claimed.
Course structure:
A one day lively knowledge-based course with detailed hand-outs to take away.
Learning outcomes:
This course builds on our ever-popular core Welfare Benefits and Young People course andfocuses on two key welfare benefits which young people who are entitled often fail to claim: Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
By the end of the course, participants will have:
- Developed their knowledge of benefit entitlements for young people who are experiencing long-term physical or mental illness or disability
- Gained an understanding of who is likely to pass the ‘Limited Capability for Work’ test for ESA and the implications of ‘Conditionality’
- Identified who DLA is aimed at and how disability is defined (care and mobility needs)
- Developed their knowledge of how to support young people to make effective claims and how to protect vulnerable claimants
- Understood how case law can assist advisers to challenge negative decisions on behalf of their clients
