Reflecting on the current situation for young people

20 Dec 2022

As the end of the year approaches, we often find ourselves reflecting and taking stock of what another year has brought us and looking forward to what the coming year may bring.

This year has not been easy. We've seen the situation for young people go from bad to worse and as a community, it’s hard not to feel depleted. The recently released government statistics illustrate what we, as a community, have been telling the government for years. The needs of young people are increasing and growing in complexity. Many are slipping through the gaps and not getting the help they need before reaching crisis point. Thankfully, we also know how to help. Sustainably funded, open-access Youth Information, Advice and Counselling Services (YIACS) for all young people in every local area. The services that you, our members, provide are the missing puzzle piece that this government needs to back wholeheartedly.

Our members are seeing first-hand the impact of the cost-of-living and mental health crisis on young people. These issues are not likely to go away overnight. As young people face yet another recession, which will increase levels inequality and exacerbate the social determinants of mental health. We can be certain that members will witness further increases in demand for their services. The early support YIACS provide stop problems from getting worse and lasting longer. Early intervention services will be vital in ensuring young people aren’t left to reach crisis point.

The difference that our members make to young people’s lives every day is undeniable. We won’t stop fighting for their services and for the young people who need them. We can’t stop the crises, but we can help young people feel more confident and give them the support and tools they need to face these challenges on their journey into adulthood.

We will continue to fight in the new year, working collectively on the Fund the Hubs campaign and as we begin work driving equity through our upcoming landscaping and research projects. Sign up to our mailing list (if you’re not already) to ensure you don't miss any of the upcoming opportunities to get involved and have your voice heard alongside the national YIACS community.
