Youth Access and Barclays Money Skills ‘champions’
13 December, 2011
Youth Access is working with Barclays, the National Youth Agency and a consortium of four other youth and information charities to deliver the Barclays Money Skills ‘champions’ project.
Barclays Money Skills ‘champions’ is an innovative peer education project designed to build the financial knowledge and confidence of up to 5,000 young people, and equip them with the skills to share this information with their peer group.
We hope to reach 100,000 disadvantaged young people over the next three years through this model.
Project Progress
The project is being piloted between September and December 2011 in eight locations throughout England, before a national roll out in early 2012.
Support workers from eight agencies have agreed to participate in the pilot, which will involve up to 160 young people.
Support Workers are now in the process of delivering the peer education training programme to their young people to become Barclays Money Skills ‘champions’.
After training is complete the ‘champions’ will go on to deliver financial awareness activities to their peers through either informal or formal peer education opportunities.
Continued support will be provided throughout the life of the pilot to ensure the Support Workers and young ‘champions’ get the most out of the project.
Youth Access has three members participating in the pilot project:
Young People’s Centre – Brighton
Step Forward – London
Youth Start – Rotherham
