Youth Access welcomes ‘The Cabin’

02 December, 2008

A pioneering young person’s advice service, ‘The Cabin’, was formally opened in Stockton-on-Tees by local Youth MP Elizabeth Shearer on 26 November 2008.

‘The Cabin’ is the first specialist young person’s advice service to be developed in partnership through Youth Access ‘Rights to Access’ project with Stockton District Advice & Information Service, which is the local Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

The cutting of the ribbon will represent the culmination of ground breaking work, led by Youth Access, to build provision of specialist advice and information to young people, who are known to be poorly served by regular advice agencies. The dedication and commitment of those involved in the service in Stockton enabled this project to come to fruition.

Youth Access Director, Barbara Rayment, said “Young people are more likely to need, but less likely to get advice than any other section of the population. When they need advice they want to access it in a young person friendly environment, from an adviser they trust and feel a connection with. They also want to be able to engage with a whole range of other support services if needed. It is really pleasing therefore to welcome this service, which is the product of genuine local commitment and a lot of hard work in development, and which marks a real recognition that high quality advice services specifically for young people are needed if their distinctive needs are to be met.”

Janine Browne, Manager of the service, said "this is a great service and an exciting opportunity for the young people of our borough. We recognised young people often do not seek advice and we are trying to reach out and change this. The cabin gives advice on social welfare law in a youth friendly setting. Key to the successful establishment of the Cabin has been the development support we received from Youth Access, and the diverse funding we have achieved including the biggest funder the Big Lottery Fund.”
