Youth Policy must recognise crucial role of YIACS
26 September, 2011
Youth Access has been working to influence the Government’s forthcoming Youth Policy.
We have highlighted the crucial work and contribution of Youth Information, Advice and Counselling Services in a formal written response to the Department for Education's Positive For Youth consultation.
Our response highlights a number of concerns, including the risk of Government policy further sidelining early intervention services for young people and possible threats to counselling services from the new investment in CBT.
In our response we call for:
• a greater focus on young adults in government policy
• a greater share of early intervention funding to be reserved for young people
• greater recognition of the important role of youth advice services helping young people with housing, money and other social welfare problems
We have also held encouraging discussions with senior officials leading the development of the Youth Policy within the DfE and attended a joint meeting with the DfE and Department of Health to explore aspects of Government health policy that impact on young people, providing us with an unprecedented opportunity to cover in detail the concerns and issues set out in our written response.
We understand that the Government will publish its Youth Policy, which will be cross-departmental, towards the end of November.
