Advice & rights

We know that access to advice services and legal support is vital for many young people, and yet this support is often out of reach. Cuts to legal aid coupled with limited access to legal advice leaves many young people in the dark.

What we do

As the recognised national body for YIACS (Youth Information, Advice and Counselling Services), Youth Access acts as a focal point for organisations and government departments interested in young people’s access to rights-based advice, such as housing, homelessness, welfare benefits, debt and employment.

Resources

We have accumulated a comprehensive evidence-base exploring young people’s needs, behaviours and the impacts of advice. We also publish a number of resources promoting good practice in youth advice work.

Policy

We work to change government policy to improve young people’s access to advice. Through JustRights, Youth Access brings together a coalition of charities campaigning for fair access to advice, advocacy and legal representation for children and young people.

Education

As well as access to legal advice, young people need access to education about their rights so they can understand and stand up for them. That is why we lead the way in public legal education (PLE) for young people.

The Make Our Rights Reality program provides training to young people to help them understand their rights. Our program training resources are freely available for organisations that wish to offer their own PLE training for young people.
