Applications open for our new National Youth Counselling Working Group

We are delighted to announce that we are establishing a new National Youth Counselling Working Group. If you are a senior counselling practitioner working in a YIACS who would like to work with others in the field to tackle training, workforce and practice issues in the youth counselling sector, you are warmly invited to apply to be an inaugural member of the working group.

The creation of the working group follows work we completed earlier this year to scope members’ needs in relation to youth counselling training, workforce and practice issues. Through in-depth interviews conducted by our counselling consultant, Jacquie Kelly, members articulated a clear demand for Youth Access to:

  • Represent and lobby on behalf of YIACS, championing youth counselling as an effective, evidence-based intervention.
  • Cascade information and updates on issues, policies and training relating to youth counselling and provide networking opportunities for members to share good practice and ideas for overcoming challenges.
  • Work more closely with BACP to communicate the needs of YIACS and ensure BACP standards and guidance support YIACS’ ethos and practice.
  • Lobby for funding for specialist youth counselling training and workforce development.

Read the summary of the report "Youth Counselling: Scoping Youth Access members’ needs" by Jacquie Kelly.

In considering how to take forward the findings and recommendations in the report, we acknowledged that much of the specialist expertise in the youth counselling field has always been located in YIACS rather than in our small team at Youth Access. Our own role is best focussed on facilitating members to come together so that we can take forward work collectively as a network.

Therefore, the National Youth Counselling Working Group will be comprised of senior practitioners in YIACS, facilitated by Youth Access and supported by a wider Community of Practice for youth counsellors.

The deadline to apply for membership of the National Youth Counselling Working Group is 12 June 2020.
