Youth Access secures new funding to support YIACS tackling youth unemployment

Funding from the Youth Futures Foundation will help us engage young people and our members to improve services responding to the socioeconomic problems facing young people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Youth Access has secured new funding to support Youth Information, Advice and Counselling Services (YIACS) delivering services to tackle unemployment and other socioeconomic issues facing young people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The grant of £132,000 over 12 months will enable Youth Access to provide infrastructural support to members through new research, resources, youth participation programmes and a community of practice for YIACS practitioners.

The Youth Futures Foundation was established to find, fund, support and evaluate programmes which help young people to move into meaningful work. Unemployment amongst 16-24-year olds is currently four times as high as any other age group; those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds face the biggest challenge in getting a job.

Cassandra Harrison, CEO of Youth Access, said:

“Young people are currently facing the sharp end of the economic uncertainty resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Youth Access YIACS report an increased demand for advice on debt, benefits and housing, and help with job-seeking, as well as a significant increase in referrals for counselling and anger management. It’s clear that the holistic, young person-centred support that YIACS deliver has never been more vital.

“This is why we are thrilled to receive funding from Youth Futures Foundation. It will allow us to generate new research and resources to support our members delivering frontline services to young people, and bring them together to share practices and find solutions to common challenges. Together we can ensure that even more young people get the support and advice they need to help them through these challenging times.”

Youth Futures Foundation’s Chief Executive, Anna Smee, commented:

“We are thrilled to invest in the vital work Youth Access do to support the youth employment eco system through providing infrastructural support to members. Youth Futures Foundation is committed to a society where all young people have equitable access to good quality jobs, by identifying ‘what works’, investing in good practice and initiating new ways of working – to ignite systems change. This partnership will support our ambitions and help to deliver our vision.”
